Dumaguete:The City Of Gentle People

Dumaguete:The City Of Gentle People

The City of Dumaguete is located in Negros Oriental. And one of the Largest city of the province. Dumaguete is referred to as a university town because of the presence of four universities and a number of other colleges. "Dumaguete" was coined from the Visayan word daggit, which means "to snatch". The word dumaguet, meaning "to swoop", was coined because of frequent raids by pirates on this once coastal town, and its power to attract and keep visitors.

Dumaguete Bell Tower is also known as the Campanario de Dumaguete it is the oldest known Belfry in the province, A commanding historical structure built in the year 1811. It is an imposing stone structurethat certainly calls for the attention of many passers-by. Because of its antiquity and authenticity.

St. Catherine of Alexandria Church is one of the solid structural witnesses of Dumaguete’s rich history and culture – and why it is nicknamed The City of Gentle People.  For DumagueteƱos  it is known as the  Dumaguete Cathedral Church. It is also the “Oldest Stone Church in Negros”. The church was originally built in 1754 to 1776. Statues of Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke and John can be found above the four pillars which hold the entrance gate of the Cathedral Church area. On the church’s facade are the statues of Saints Peter and Paul. Devotees regularly visit the church, even when there’s no mass, to ask forforgiveness and say their thanks and praises.

Silliman University is a private research university in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, Philippines.Established in 1901 as Silliman Institute by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions, it is the first American university in the Philippines and the entire Asian continent.

Silliman Hall is the oldest standing American structure in the Philippines. Its architecture is reminiscent of the Stick styletype of architecture that characterize American buildings in the late 19th century.

The Rizal Boulevard in Dumaguete City was named after the great Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, marking it as one of the historical sites found in the city. a 780-meter strip of wide beach front promenade. It runs almost entirely along the city’s commercial district and provides quite a refreshing and calming view when dining or having a drink at one of the many restaurants or bars lining the street.

Before you leave Dumaguete you must visit and try.
The new Sans Rival bistro is so much more than the already popular Sans Rival Cakes and Pastry shops in Dumaguete. Bringing the decadence of France with the style of Italy and an air of the orient into this refreshing colonial architecture.

Villa Iska : New in Bacolod

Villa Iska

Beyond your expectation

A different kind of experience just with in the City. This unique inland resort in Brgy Pta.taytay, Bacolod City, offers you a place that you never imagine.

Our friend invited us here to celebrate her birthday. The place is not that big but it can accommodate small events. This is the only inland resort in bacolod that has white sand beach. A place where most of the kids will love and enjoy.

Aside from its beautiful over looking beach view. It has also a chromatic architecture. They have two regular size pool for adult and children. You can also view their collection of fish and tarantulas.

They have picnic tables for a group of 4 or 5 person, they have cabanas for larger groups and Cottages and rooms for overnight stay.  The accommodation rates is fair, but I take issue with the entrance fee. P150 for me is too much when you just went there is swim. Yet, they do provide a perfect summer trend and even if it's not summer season, this is where people can go.

How to get there:
> When you are in the city plaza which is in-front San Sebastian Cathedral, you just need to take a ride on a jeep that labels(Pta.taytay- cantral market).Don,t forget to ask first the driver if he will pass by the beach or Baybay area.
Fare: 15 pesos

The Kalayaan Hall

The Presidential Museum and Library has offer to its visitor a glance of the history and heritage of the Philippine presidency. To its development as the nerve center of the executive power. This place stands to honor and showcase the lives and achievements of both the former and the current head of state.

"MalacaƱang is the Place of the People"

It was the former president Ramon Magsaysay, who kept his promise of being a president for the people by opening up the palace to the public during his term. His statue greets visitors to the Palace, before starting their journey around Kalayaan Hall.

One of the oldest office in the Kalayaan Hall, where President Ferdinand Marcos used to have office. In 1972 this office witness the most historic turn of our democratic system as he declares the Presidential proclamation No. 1081 placing the active Republic under Martial Law.

The reproduction of the text of proclamation was place on that room as well as the duplicated declaration documents and furniture set by the late President Marcos.  With our official tour guide in the photo where he allow us to see on that oldest television  the National broadcast of the announcement of martial law.

The OsmeƱa Cabinet Room

One of the elements that you can find was this dining set used by the president in all special occasions. The oil portrait and bust of the former first lady Emelda R. Marcos.

The Quezon Executive Office

The office was an addition to the main building as Quezon assumes office in the late 30s and the early years of President Ferdinand Marcos in the 70s, Gen Fabian Ver  assumes office here as Pres. Marcos transferred to the old governor- generals office and it was restored to its original Quezon era furniture in 2003.

In this office you will also find this rare miniature figure of the armed forces of the Philippines in ceremonial unit honoring

their commander in chief.

The old Council of State Room was named by proclamation for President Elpidio Quirino who, being Vice-President  took his first oath of the office as President here in 1948 after the sudden death of President Manuel Roxas. From the Quezon to Marcos administrations, many cabinet meetings as well as conferences and other ceremonies of state were conducted in this room. The Southeast Gallery on the second floor of Kalayaan Hall features the memorabilia of the 11th and first woman President, Corazon Aquino. On display are photographs, awards she received during and after her presidency, and her paintings.

The Main Hall and Library

This used to be the location of eight guest bedrooms dating from the American era. Today, it is the main hall of the Presidential Museum and Library with a side Gallery of Presidents’ memorabilia, publications and documents – pertaining to the fifteen persons who have held the Presidency.

But the thing that constantly caught the attention from the visitors is the little statue of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo dressed as captain of a ship with her hands on the helm and what seems to be the spirit of Jesus Christ guiding her in the background.

It was from the front west balcony of this hall that President Marcos took his last public oath of office and delivered his farewell speech to their supporters on February 25, 1986.
